Short answer: Before winter, get the paint fully clean and add wax or, for longer protection, a paint sealant. During winter, wash every couple of weeks and soon after big snow or salt days, paying extra attention to the wheels, wheel wells and lower panels. Washing indoors avoids frozen locks and door seals, and our Macomb shop is open all winter.
From November to March, Michigan roads are covered in salt and brine. It keeps us moving in the snow, but it’s hard on cars. Salt spray coats the paint, wheels and lower panels, and if it sits there for weeks it dulls the finish and speeds up rust where the paint is already chipped or scratched.
The good news: a little protection before winter and regular washing during it make a big difference.
Before winter: protect the paint
- Get it fully clean first. Our Gloss & Protect exterior ($119) adds a pre-wash and a decontamination wash, which removes bonded road film that a normal wash leaves behind.
- Add a layer of protection. Wax helps, and sealant lasts longer. Our Clay & Seal exterior ($149) uses a clay bar to get the paint smooth, then seals it with paint sealant. Our Premium Full Service includes a 12-month exterior protection wax.
- Thinking longer term? Paint correction and ceramic coating are done in our climate-controlled bay, so coatings cure properly even in January. See wax vs. sealant vs. ceramic coating.
During winter: wash the salt off
- Wash every couple of weeks, and soon after big snow or salt days when you can. The longer salt sits, the more damage it does.
- Don’t forget the lower half. Wheels, wheel wells, rocker panels and the lower doors take the most salt spray. We clean the wheel wells as part of our exterior details.
- Be careful with brushes. Automatic brush washes can leave swirl marks. Every OmniJoy exterior is a scratch-safe hand wash, never brushes.
- Mind the cold. Washing outside in freezing temperatures can freeze locks, door seals and water on the paint. Washing indoors avoids that.
What a winter wash looks like
This Kia Soul in Macomb was covered in winter salt film and road grime. Here it is before and after our Clay & Seal exterior.

Inside the car
Salt gets tracked in too. White rings on the carpet and mats are salt, and the longer they sit, the harder they are to remove. Our road salt carpet guide covers what to do at home and when steam or extraction is worth it.
Hazy headlights?
Winter is also when cloudy, yellowed headlights matter most, with longer nights and gray days. Headlight restoration is $150 for both headlights, about 45 minutes, and finished with a UV sealant. See how it works.
We’re open all winter
Mobile detailing pauses from mid-October to March. Our climate-controlled shop near 23 Mile & Garfield in Macomb is open Monday–Saturday, 8 AM–6 PM, every month of the year, so winter salt cleanup happens indoors.
Want to stay ahead of the salt? Our biweekly maintenance plan includes an exterior visit every two weeks from $45 for a sedan, after your first full detail.
Book your detail, or text us and we’ll help you pick the right exterior package.
